The best workout isn’t necessarily the longest one: If you’re looking to boost your metabolism, then slash your rest time, says a new study from California State University at San Marcos.
Researchers found that guys who rested for just 30 seconds between weightlifting sets burned nearly 10 percent more calories after their routine than when they rested for 90 seconds between sets.
Why’s that? “Shorter rest periods make your muscles work significantly harder, which causes more damage,” says B.J. Gaddour, C.S.C.S., a Men’s Health training advisor. “Then your body needs to do extra work to repair that damage,” which burns more calories.
For a super-quick, low-rest routine that will make you burn fat at a blistering rate, try 10-Minute Torchers, Men’s Health‘s new 3-DVD workout designed by Gaddour.
