The Food That Could Prevent Cavities

The Food That Could Prevent Cavities

Can cheddar protect your chompers? Cheese might keep your mouth cavity-free, finds new research from the Academy of General Dentistry.

Scientists tested the pH levels in mouths of people who didn’t brush their teeth for 48 hours, then asked the participants to eat either milk, sugar-free yogurt, or cheese. The results: After 3 minutes, cheese eaters had the largest pH boost.

Here’s why that matters: When bacteria break down foods like carbs and sugars, they excrete acid, which drops the pH balance of your mouth, says Men’s Health dentistry advisor Mark Wolff, D.D.S, Ph.D. Acid can cause erosion of enamel (the protective surface on your teeth) and up your odds of an unpleasant trip to the dentist.

But eating cheese before a glass of wine, a sip of cola, or a bite of tomato may help neutralize excessive acid. While no research proves that cheese can reverse any existing damage, it doesn’t do any harm, Dr. Wolff says.

Your best shot at eliminating acid is to follow the tried-and-true regimen of brushing and flossing twice a day, for at least 2 minutes each session. Equally important: steering clear of these 12 foods your dentist won’t eat.

Beware of This Deceiving Dessert

Beware of This Deceiving Dessert

Don’t fall for the cherry on top. Adding nutritious garnishes to unhealthy foods throws off your mind’s calorie calculator, finds new research in the Journal of Consumer Psychology.

In the study, people’s calorie estimates dropped from 481 to 405 when strawberries were thrown on top of a dish of ice cream. The study participants also ate 35 percent more junk food if it included a healthy addition.

Because your mind wants to justify unhealthy snacking—and because “nutritious” equates to “low-cal” in your brain—lobbing a few healthy pieces of fruit onto your sundae tricks you into thinking the dish isn’t so bad for you, explains study coauthor Ying Jiang, Ph.D., of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

If you want to fool your brain in a healthy way, eat your dessert from a small plate. The image of a packed dish—even a tiny one—makes you feel like you’re eating a lot, and so can help you consume 22 percent less calories without sacrificing satisfaction, research shows.

The Cancer Risk You Don’t Know About

The Cancer Risk You Don’t Know About

Cancer run in your family? Read this: Researchers looked at 12,000 cancer patients over 18 years and found that people who had first-degree relatives with a history of one type of cancer were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with a different kind, according to a new report in the Annals of Oncology.

“Some of the associations [we found] are probably due to shared environmental factors or lifestyle habits such as smoking and drinking,” says study author Eva Negri, M.D., of the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan. However, when researchers controlled for some of those factors they still found a link, which means certain genes could influence the risk of cancer at multiple sites, Dr. Negri explains.

These findings can help researchers I.D. those genetic links down the road and improve screening and diagnosis for different types of cancer based on your family history.

For now, your best bet at preventing the deadly disease is to stick to screening recommendations. If cancer runs in the family, discuss with your doctor the possibility of starting screenings at a younger age, since your risk may be even higher. Certain tests, such as those below, may be covered by insurance before the recommended screening age when you’re considered high-risk.

PSA testing: At least 29 states have enacted laws requiring insurers to cover PSA testing for men starting between the ages of 40 and 50, depending on the state. Some states require testing be covered for guys as young as 35 to 40 who are considered high-risk, including African Americans and those with a family history.

Colonoscopy: If you have a first-degree relative who has had colorectal cancer or adenomatous polyps, many insurance companies cover colonoscopies as frequently as every 2 years starting at age 40, or 10 years younger than the earliest diagnosis in your family—whichever comes first.

The Weird Reason Women Don’t Flirt with You

The Weird Reason Women Don’t Flirt with You

on the road

Strange study of the day: Her fancy purse could repel other women, says new research from the University of Minnesota.

In the study, scientists found that women would actually avoid a dude simply because of his date’s pricey purse. What gives? Ladies tend to view designer goods as a reflection of devotion from a lover—even if the guy had nothing to do with the purchase, says lead study author Vladas Griskevicius, Ph.D. And that “assumed” devotion is enough of a shield to keep potential partners at bay.

If you’ve got a girl, you’re not looking to be approached anyway. (Right?) But this study highlights another weird way that a relationship can rub off on you. In fact, recent German research suggests that taken guys preferred an attractive female researcher to stand further away from them, while single dudes wanted her closer. And another study this year found that being around your buddy’s wife can make your T-levels—which usually shoot up around a woman of interest or even a rival’s partner—plunge.

So can her handbag make other women jealous? Sure. But who cares? The only thing it really means is that she’s got fantastic taste—and that you might want to step up your own style game. Be an even classier couple by adding the best style accessories for men to your wardrobe.

The Mindset You Need to Stop Overeating

The Mindset You Need to Stop Overeating

Aim small for big success. Setting one simple, specific goal is the best way to cut your bad habits, finds new Dutch research.

While trying to curb unhealthy snacking, people who stuck to a single resolution lowered their caloric intake by 42 percent. But when the same people tried to implement three diet objectives, their calorie consumption shot back up to normal.

The more goals you have, the less important each one seems and the more likely you are to ignore them, says study coauthor Aukje Verhoeven, of Utrecht University. That falls in line with past research that shows a single money-saving rule helps you stash away more cash than attempting multiple savings tactics.

Whether you’re trying to quit overeating or smoking, think about the one time when you’re most likely to engage in your bad behavior—say, while you watch TV at night. Now come up with a single “if-then goal,” as the dieters did in the study. For example, “If I feel hungry while watching TV, I’ll eat an apple.” You’ll be snacking less in no time, the study finds.
